Geschichte
Die International Hockey League wurde 1991 mit dem Namen Colonial Hockey League gegründet. Die ersten Teams der Liga stammten aus Brantford (Ontario), Detroit (Michigan), Flint (Michigan), St. Thomas (Ontario) Thunder Bay (Ontario). Nach einigen Jahren kamen mehrere Teams hinzu, die eher im Osten der USA beheimatet waren, wie z.B. Adirondacks und Danbury (Connecticut), Binghamton (New York), und Richmond (Virginia). 1997 wurde die Liga schließlich in die United Hockey League umbenannt. 2007 entstand dann mit International Hockey League der bis 2010 benutzte Name.
Am 13. Juli 2010 wurde die International Hockey League mit der Central Hockey League verschmolzen und fünf neue Teams wurden aufgenommen: Bloomington PrairieThunder, Dayton Gems, Evansville IceMen, Fort Wayne Komets und Quad City Mallards. Die Flint Generals und die Port Huron Icehawks stiegen aus und lösten ihre Franchises auf.
