Pressemitteilungen

02.10.2011 - Thompson signs Dustin Wood
Blaze swoop for Wood CPP Coventry Blaze can today confirm they have signed Canadian defenceman Dustin Wood.

The 30-year-old Ontario native has spent the past two seasons with Anyang Halla in the Asia League, where he won the league twice.

Wood brings with him a wealth of experience having appeared in 320 regular-season and play-off games in the American Hockey League.

He will not be available for a couple of weeks while the paperwork is completed but coach Paul Thompson said: “I am really excited with the signing of Dustin.

“I needed a guy who could play the last 30-40 seconds of a period and to close games out and he is a guy who can do that.

“He has vast experience, he has played a lot of games in the AHL as well as the DEL and earned a big contract in Japan.

“Dustin had signed for a team in the Czech league but it didn’t work out. He has been sitting at home without a job but he is just the kind of guy we need.

“He will help us shut down teams. He is not coming here to score a load of points, he is coming here to stop other teams’ point-scorers from getting points.

“Dustin has won championships in the past and he knows what it takes to win, which was another big thing for me.”

After four seasons with Peterborough Petes in the Ontario Hockey League, Wood joined Trenton Devils of the ECHL for his first professional season in 2002/03 before being called up to the AHL by Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

He then spent the next four years in the AHL, icing for Springfield Falcons, Utah Grizzlies, Houston Aeros, Syracuse Crunch and Manitoba Moose.

In 2007, Wood moved to Germany and played two seasons in the DEL with ERC Ingolstadt and Kassel Huskies.

Two successful years in the Asia League followed and he had signed for HC Ceske Budejovice in the Czech Republic before heading to the Skydome.
